South Korea's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to impose a fine of about 20 billion won (approximately $15.1 million) on Samsung Electronics for misleading advertisements that concealed features limiting the performance of its Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy S21, S22, and Galaxy Tab S8 series, when running high-spec games. The FTC said Samsung violated the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising by omitting information that maximum performance is uniformly restricted immediately upon executing high-spec game apps, and issued a corrective order along with the fine. Samsung has declared legal action, calling the decision "difficult to understand," and said the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) was intended to reduce heat and maintain game performance. Yonhap reports the FTC announced the tentative fine on Tuesday, and Business Korea notes Samsung has challenged the 20 billion won surcharge.
