Korean judges report AI fake precedents in 80% of cases
A Supreme Court survey released Monday found that eight in 10 South Korean judges have encountered court cases citing false or nonexistent legal precedents generated by artificial intelligence, Yonhap reports. The survey, conducted by the court's administrative office from Oct. 6 for 10 days among 360 judges handling civil, family and administrative cases, showed that such instances appeared not only from parties themselves but also in documents submitted by lawyers, according to Dong-A Ilbo. One judge reportedly found that a Supreme Court precedent cited by a lawyer had a fake case number created by AI, Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. The phenomenon, described as AI 'hallucination,' is emerging as a serious problem in actual trials, the newspaper added.
