80% of Korean judges report AI fake precedents in court
A Supreme Court survey released Nov. 2 found that about 80% of South Korean judges have encountered court cases citing false or nonexistent legal precedents generated by artificial intelligence. The survey, conducted by the court administration office last month among 360 judges handling civil, family and administrative cases, was the first of its kind by the Supreme Court, Yonhap reports. The Korea Times reports eight in 10 judges experienced such cases, with instances found not only in submissions by parties themselves but also in documents filed by lawyers. The Kyunghyang Shinmun reports 68% of judges said they had seen fake precedents written by AI, and that verifying their authenticity could delay trials and increase litigation costs. Chosun Ilbo reports the survey was conducted among 360 judges at all court levels over ten days starting last month.
