80% of Korean judges see AI-generated fake precedents: survey
A Supreme Court survey released Nov. 2 found that about 80% of judges handling civil, family, and administrative cases have encountered AI-generated fake or nonexistent legal precedents cited in court documents, Yonhap and Chosun Ilbo report. The court administration surveyed 360 judges over 10 days last month; the Korea Times says eight in 10 judges experienced such cases, while Kyunghyang reports 68% of judges said they had seen false precedents written by AI. The fake citations appeared not only in party submissions but also in lawyers' filings, and judges worry that verifying them delays trials and raises litigation costs, Yonhap and Dong-a Ilbo note.
